Dr. Su received his M.A. in Population Studies from the University of Michigan (1970), and his Sc.D. in Population Dynamics from the Johns Hopkins University (1975). His past professional experience includes work in the Department of Population Dynamics at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland and in the Office of Smoking and Health, USDHHS. In 1982, Dr. Su was appointed to the position of Research Associate in the Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has been with the STATEPI team as Systems Manager since its inception in 1987.

Dr. Su's responsibilities include monitoring and maintaining the STATEPI computing system (which consists of a SUN Microsystems server, Windows servers, and all user's stations), as well as database management. He is responsible for configuring and administering all servers; monitoring security and performance issues; and providing backup and recovery processes for the STATEPI network. He also oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of the CAMACS, WDMAC and KIDMAC data management systems to fulfill the research needs of the studies and handles technical issues that include design, support, and maintenance of databases and database servers. Dr. Su supervises and/or collaborates with several staff members in the performance of their duties in relation to the computing system, database management, and study web-base operation.
